Overview
Up in the Air is a SkyLog and Window Seat companion app for iOS. It lets you capture photos, identify landmarks, and record your journeys from the sky. We built this app with a simple principle: your data stays on your device.
This Privacy Policy explains how Up in the Air handles your information. All data is stored locally on your device using SwiftData, with optional iCloud sync managed entirely by Apple under your Apple ID. ARRcade has no servers and no access to your data.
Up in the Air stores your SkyLogs, photos, and location data on your device. If you enable iCloud sync, Apple syncs that data across your devices under your Apple ID. We have no servers, no analytics, no ads, and no tracking. Your data is yours.
Data We Collect
Up in the Air accesses certain data to provide its core functionality. All data remains on your device or in your personal iCloud account. Here is a complete breakdown:
| Data Type | Collected? | Accessible to ARRcade? |
|---|---|---|
| Location (GPS) | On Device Only | No |
| Photos & camera | On Device Only | No |
| Photo library access | User-Selected | No |
| iCloud sync data | User-Controlled | No |
| Analytics / crash reports | Not Collected | No |
| Advertising / tracking | Not Collected | No |
| Name, email, or account | Not Collected | No |
| Device identifiers | Not Collected | No |
Location Data (GPS)
- What: Precise GPS coordinates, altitude, speed, heading, horizontal and vertical accuracy.
- When: During active use of Locate Me, SkyLog capture, and trip recording.
- Why: Core functionality — SkyLogs record where you were, and the landmark identifier uses location to determine what you're looking at.
- Stored: On-device in SwiftData, synced via iCloud if enabled.
- Shared: Never shared with third parties.
Location data is only accessed during active use of features that require it. We do not track your location in the background. All location data stays on your device and is never sent to ARRcade servers.
Photos & Camera
- What: Photos captured via the in-app camera, or imported from your Photo Library.
- When: When you create a SkyLog with a photo.
- Why: SkyLog photo capture is the core feature of Up in the Air.
- EXIF metadata: Read from imported photos (GPS coordinates, date, heading) for SkyLog creation.
- Stored: On-device at original resolution, synced via iCloud if enabled.
- Shared: Only when you explicitly share via the Share Card feature.
When you import from your Photo Library, we use read-only access and only access photos you have explicitly selected. We do not scan or access your full photo library.
iCloud Sync
- What: SkyLog data (text, coordinates, photos) synced across your devices via CloudKit.
- When: Automatically when enabled in Settings.
- Why: So you can access your SkyLogs on all your Apple devices.
- Apple manages this data under your Apple ID — ARRcade has no access to it.
iCloud sync is entirely managed by Apple under your Apple ID. ARRcade does not operate any servers and cannot read, modify, or access your synced data. You can disable iCloud sync at any time in the app's Settings.
GeoNames Landmark Database
- What: A bundled SQLite database of geographic landmarks (mountains, lakes, cities, airports).
- Source: GeoNames.org (Creative Commons Attribution license).
- Contains: Names, coordinates, elevation, feature type, country code.
- This data is bundled in the app — it is not collected from users.
- Used for: Offline landmark identification in the Window Seat feature.
The GeoNames database ships with the app and is used entirely offline for landmark identification. No network requests are made to look up landmarks. This is reference data, not user data.
Data Not Collected
Up in the Air does not collect, store, or transmit any of the following:
- No account or login required.
- No name, email, or personal information.
- No contacts, calendar, or health data.
- No browsing or search history.
- No device identifiers sent to servers.
- No advertising tracking.
- No analytics, crash reports, or usage data.
- No third-party SDKs that collect data.
- No ads served.
Data Storage
- All data stored locally on-device using SwiftData.
- Optional iCloud sync via CloudKit (user-controlled in Settings).
- No ARRcade servers involved — zero server-side storage.
- Photos stored at original resolution on-device.
Data Deletion
- You can delete individual SkyLogs from within the app.
- You can delete all data by removing the app.
- iCloud data can be managed via Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage Storage.
Children's Privacy
- Up in the Air is rated 4+ with no objectionable content.
- We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
- No account creation, no social features, no user-generated content shared publicly.
Your Rights
Because Up in the Air stores no data on our servers, your data remains entirely under your control on your device and in your iCloud account.
- Access: All your data is visible within the app — we hold none.
- Deletion: Delete individual SkyLogs in the app or remove the app entirely.
- Portability: Share individual SkyLogs via the Share Card feature.
For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), this design means your GDPR rights are inherently satisfied — no formal request to us is required because no personal data is processed on our servers.
For California residents: Up in the Air does not sell personal information, so CCPA opt-out rights do not apply.
Policy Changes
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we will update the "Effective Date" at the top of this page and notify users through an app update notice in the App Store.
Given our architecture — no data collection on servers, no accounts — any change that introduced server-side data collection would require explicit opt-in from users.
